The European Commission wants to make a 20 percent cut in energy consumption by 2020 mandatory for all members, a newspaper reported Saturday, quoting a proposal document. The specialist Europolitique daily said the commission wanted to turn the condition, which is currently only a non-binding goal, into a compulsory target.
The European Union in December set three targets: cutting gas emissions by 20 percent by 2020 compared to their 1990 levels, raising renewable energy to 20 percent of all energy produced, and slashing consumption by 20 percent. Only the last target was non-binding.
