World Standards Day being observed today with the theme "Tackling climate change through standards" is an opportunity to raise awareness about standardisation and adoption of quality control standards in environment sector. This is all the more important when these standards are equally applicable to business, industry, government and the consumers all over the world.
By adopting world standard to protect, conserve, rehabilitate and improve environmental conditions in Pakistan we can successfully combat the adverse effects of climate change. I am happy to recall that the National Environmental Quality Standards (NEQS) were adopted in Pakistan for the first time in the year 1993 during the tenure of PPP government. It was my privilege then to serve that government as Minister for Environment.
The present democratic government is conscious of the need to adopt environmental safeguards. A number of Environmental Quality Standards have been developed including Ambient Air Quality Standards, Noise Standards, Drinking Water Quality Standards and EURO - II Standards for vehicles emission. These Standards have been developed to ensure that Pakistan becomes a country that complies with environmental safeguards standards to improve the quality of life of its people.
I am happy to note that Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA) as member of International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), is taking part in the awareness campaign among all the stakeholders in the country.
I am sure that World Standards Day will generate the requisite interest and consciousness about the true significance and impact of standards in our society. I hope that this day would open new avenues in further sensitising the community to the importance of adopting standardisation and quality control systems.
