South Africa's 2009/10 sugar output is expected to rise slightly to 2.33 million tonnes from 2.26 million in the previous season on the back of higher global sugar prices, an industry body said on Thursday. "We're very optimistic that the rise in prices will lead to higher production, and there is a possibility that we may see (output) slightly higher than that, depending on how the yields turn out," South African Sugar Association Executive Director Trix Trikam said during a media tour.
The country's production of sugarcane is expected to rise to 19.66 million tonnes this season, from 19.3 million in the last season, he said. South Africa's sugarcane production fell by 400,000 tonnes in the 2008/09 season compared with the previous season, while sugar production in the year also fell by 13,000 tonnes last season compared with the year before.
