India has invited Pakistan for talks over controversial Kishenganga project, being built by it in occupied Kashmir on Neelum river, a tributary of Jhelum river. Pakistan has raised its serious concerns over the design of the dam describing it a violation of Indus Basin Treaty as it will affect normal flow of water down stream.
Pakistan has also said that Islamabad will approach the World Bank for arbitration, as India was not removing Pakistan's concerns on the issue. Indian Indus Water Commissioner G Ranganathan has written a letter to his Pakistani counterpart Syed Jamaat Ali Shah inviting him for talks on the issue, media reports quoting official sources said.
In his letter, Ranganathan has said that approaching the World Bank was not warranted as the matter could be resolved through bilateral talks, the sources said. Under the Indus Water Treaty, Pakistan has exclusive rights over three of the common rivers-Indus, Jhelum and Chenab while India has exclusive rights over Sutlej, Ravi and Beas.
