A meeting was held in Punjab University under the chairmanship of Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mujahid Kamran, which was attended by Deans and Administrative Officers. It was decided in the meeting that three big parking lots will be established at the extreme ends of the new campus near Gate no. 2, Islamic Centre and IBIT where students and visitors will park their vehicles.
No vehicle of students and visitors will be allowed entry in the premises of campus other than the parking stands. A shuttle bus service will start to pick and drop students and visitors from these parking stands and gates to their respective departments, hostels and admin block.
The meeting also decided that security in campus would be beefed up by walk through gates, CCTV camera and metal detectors, 24 hour mobile squad of guards. Nobody will enter without identity cards and university cards. Only three gates including gate no. 1, 2 and Islamic Centre gate will be used for entry and exit in the campus.
It was also decided that a meeting of teaching departments' heads would be called on coming Saturday to take their input for ensuring proper security in their departments. It was decided that teachers along with students and employees will be asked to keep an eye on their surroundings and immediately inform security centre in case of any suspicion. An awareness campaign will be launched in this regard.
Meanwhile according to the spokes person of the Government College University (GCU) Lahore, Vice Chancellor Dr Khalid Aftab has discussed the university's security arrangements with the heads of all administrative and academic departments.
The vice chancellor told the staff members about the existing security arrangements, measures being taken after the recent terror attacks on Islamia University and future security plans. The departments' heads made a large number of suggestions about the security of the university students.
Speaking on the occasion, the vice chancellor said the university would put in all possible efforts for the security of its students and staff members. He asked the students and staff members not to worry, saying that "we will keep our faith as strong as ever."
The GCU administration thanked the Punjab government for offering different facilities to the university for their security including the training of their security staff.
On this occasion, the university's staff members suggested that special lectures should be held in co-operation with the Punjab government to aware the students about the situation and methods of their personal security. It was also said that special emergency exercises and demonstrations should be held in all the universities in co-operation with the government.
In a press statement, GCU Registrar, Sahibzada Faisal Khursheed said that students would be informed about the opening of the university and its hostels through its website and print and electronic media. He said that all the scheduled meetings, functions and sports competitions have also been postponed till further orders.
