The Chairman Senate, Farooq H Naek, has said that International Humanitarian Law derives its ethos from the principles and fundamentals of Islam. Pakistan fully supported the basic morality and objectives of the law necessitating the respect of basic human rights in conflict zones and armed conflicts.
He was addressing a panel discussion on "International Humanitarian Law" at the 121st inter-parliamentary Union Assembly, in Geneva, says a message received here Thursday. Farooq H Naek criticised and challenged so-called theories of 'collateral damage' and 'doctrine of necessity' used by some of the big powers to justify and camouflage indiscriminate use of forcer causing loss of innocent human lives in armed conflicts.
Chairman Senate also underscored the need to identify the proper application of the humanitarian law while maintaining a balance between the state security and individual liberty, respect for national sovereignty and making distinctions between armed personnel and miscreants adding that politically motivated selective application of this law has diluted its credibility.
In another panel discussion on HIV/AIDS, Senator, Dr Safdar Abbasi highlighted the need for greater excess of world community to prevention and treatment of AIDs and called upon the international community to support Pakistan in achieving government's new initiatives under 'National Aid Programme' and the 'Enhanced HIV/AIDS control project phase-11'.
In the sidelines of the IPU Assembly, the Chairman Senate, Farooq H Naek also met with the German Parliamentary delegation. Both the delegations reiterated their desire to strengthen bilateral co-operation especially in the economic sector. The chairman laid special emphasis on co-operation and assistance in developing infrastructure on renewable energy resources. The German delegation assured all possible co-operation in this regard.
