Prime Minister of Yousuf Raza Gilani has nominated Professor Dr Muhammad Iqbal Chaudhry, Director International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), Karachi University (KU), as a member of the Executive Committee of the National Commission for Science and Technology (ECNCST) for 2 years.
The national commission comprises around 26 members, including the prime minister who works as chairman of the commission, said a spokesman of the ICCBS on Sunday.
The main objective of the commission is to ensure proper linkages of science and technology effort with the production sector and development plans, while other is to promote science and technology in the country, including funding for R&D and infrastructure. In the commission, the federal minister for science and technology also works as vice-chairman, while the federal minister for finance works as ex-officio member, he said.
Secretary ECNCST Dr Tariq-ur-Rahman congratulated Dr Chaudhry on his nomination and said, "I am confident that your background, experience and positive outlook will be an asset that will help in achieving the objectives for which NCST was established.
KU Vice Chancellor Professor Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqui and former Chairman Higher Education Commission Professor Dr Atta-ur-Rahman, in their separate messages, have also welcomed his nomination.
