A researcher just recently altered the way of children clothing by creating clothes that grow with the child.

Ryan Yasin, a student from London created a new type of material that grows with kids as they mature. Named as ‘Petit Pli’, the clothes are designed from a pleated water-proof, recyclable and a machine-washable fabric that unfolds as the child grows. This invention can save people a huge sum of money as they spend it for their child’s clothing for the time period of three-month to three-year old.

The fabric was origami-inspired and Yasin further aims to make his clothing line “the most advanced kids’ clothing in the world”. Petit Pli works by implementing the negative Poisson’s ratio. When the fabric is stretched, it becomes thicker and is able to expand in two directions simultaneously, letting the garment to move along with child.

Another trait of this product is that these properties can remain intact by treating it with heat. Also, the garment is designed in such a way to be long-lasting and able to fold down small enough to slip it in pockets, informed The Guardian.

This invention has won Yasin the James Dyson Award and according to him, he will use his prize money to help his business grow as he has created over 500 prototypes so far, reported Futurism. According to Yasin, he is already in talks with a big UK retailer and plans that the initial clothing will go on sale within months in the UK.

Yasin said, “It’s just great to have that backing and recognition of my solution. The prize money is an added bonus, but I know how I will use it. In addition to supporting my R&D, it will help me form an interdisciplinary team of experts to take Petit Pli to the next level: putting it in the hands of parents worldwide and making a tangible difference to the way we consume resources in the fashion industry.”
