Chief Justice Lahore High Court (LHC), disposing of a suo motu case against demolition of Chishtia High School, has directed Chief Secretary Punjab to reconstruct the razed building within three months. Earlier, Chief Secretary appearing before the court stated that the demolished building was illegally constructed through encroachment by the school.
However, the Chief Justice brushed aside the argument and ordered reconstruction of the demolished part of the school. On last date of hearing, the CJ had observed that after the creation of Pakistan the school was named as Chishtia High School. Later in 1976 the ETPB handed over all such schools to education departments of provinces under an agreement.
According to the agreement, places of worship including Gurdwaras, Mandirs and non-Muslim shrines were to be kept in their original positions. The CJ further observed that such properties could only be used for educational purposes. But the building of the school, having strength of at least 500 students, was being demolished in order to widen the road.
