Legal fraternity here, on Tuesday, observed November 3 as "Black Day" to flay the imposition of emergency and promulgation of infamous PCO on November 3, 2007 by former president Pervez Musharraf. In provincial capital, two protest rallies were taken out by the Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) and Lahore Bar Association (LBA) with the participation of civil society's members and others as well.
Lawyers appeared before the courts till break-time while wearing black ribbons on their arms and later boycotted the court proceedings to attend general house meetings at their respective bars. Black flags were also hoisted on bar's premises. President LHCBA Nasira Iqbal and other representatives led the rally from GPO Chowk to State Bank Chowk. While the lawyers of LBA marched from Aiwan-e-Adal to PMG Chowk under the leadership of their president Rana Zia Abdul Rehman.
The marchers chanted slogans against the dictatorial regime of former president Pervez Musharraf and his unconstitutional acts, including brutal actions against lawyers for launching a movement for the restoration of judiciary and supremacy of constitution.
Moreover, the lawyers also chanted slogans against Kerry-Lugar Bill (KLB) terming it as against the interests and sovereignty of the country. They further condemned National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) and its beneficiaries including President Asif Ali Zardari.
Earlier, addressing the general house meeting of LHCBA the speakers had said that their movement could not be successful until Musharraf was not tried under article 6 of the constitution. They slammed the wholesale removal of superior court's judges and their detention along with family under martial law like emergency and PCO.
They lauded the movement launched by the legal fraternity of the country saying that the movement created awareness among the masses. The speakers also praised the positive role of media and civil society organisations throughout the movement aimed at the restoration of judiciary and ouster of dictator.
They further condemned the terrorist attacks by so-called Talibans and paid tribute to the personnel of security forces who laid their lives to save the country. Among others president LHCBA Nasira Iqbal, vice president SCBA Mian Waheed Iqbal, secretary Raja Zulqarnain, former vice president LHCBA Ahmad Awais, Abdul Rasheed Qureshi, Shafqat Mehmood Chohan, Manzoor Gillani and Rai Nawaz Kharal also addressed the bar members.
