The combined opposition on Friday alleged that the PPP government had rigged the Gilgit-Baltistan elections, and staged token walkout from the National Assembly in protest. Opposition Leader Nisar Ali Khan said that the PPP government did not provide level playing field to the political parties who participated in the Gilgit-Baltistan elections.
"The government had mercilessly used national resources to have an edge in Gilgit-Baltistan elections. The Chairman of Baitul Maal stayed in the area till the completion of the election process," he said. He also demanded of the government to order a judicial inquiry into the incident of killing of a man allegedly a suicide bomber at a security checkpoint in Islamabad a few days ago.
He said that the Minister for Parliamentary Affairs on Thursday had assured the House to give the reasons of this incident, but it has not been done so far. He said that the committee had unanimously recommended draft for national accountability body three months ago but the bill has not been tabled in the National Assembly yet. "The government is backtracking on the accountability bill," he claimed.
Nisar urged the government to establish an independent accountability institution headed by a judge of superior court to ensure transparent accountability in the country. He said that if the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) was not functional, which body of the government would decide matters pertaining to accountability? The government should explain who would decide the cases of ministers whether it is Attorney General.
He said the steps taken so far to eradicate militancy have proved counter-productive because no serious effort has been made in this regard. Earlier, taking part in the debate on the law and order situation in the country Engr Ameer Muqam stressed the need for taking strict measures to check terrorist activities and save the lives of innocent citizens.
He said that postings and transfers of police officials in NWFP should be on merit, as capable personnel could better handle an emergency situation. He said the government in these circumstances should keep national interests above political affiliations, and adopt a joint strategy to fight the menace of terrorism.
