Indonesian shares closed 1.73 percent higher Monday, led by foreign buying in commodities, banks and consumer stocks, dealers said. The Jakarta Composite Index gained 41.87 points to 2,468.67. Dealers said a firmer rupiah and buying across Asian markets provided support despite sporadic profit-taking by retail funds. The composite index could test the 2,500-level in coming days, dealers said.
Coal miner Bumi Resources gained 6.1 percent to 2,625 rupiah, Bank Mandiri rose 4.8 percent to 4,925, while Astra added 2.6 percent to 33,550. The rupiah closed at 9,345 to the dollar compared to 9,380 at the last close.
