South Africa has lowered its forecast for the 2009/10 season's sugarcane output based on information received from farmers, the South African Sugar Association (SASA) said on Friday. Saleable sugar production is now forecast at 2.26 million tonnes, down from 2.28 million tonnes in the last forecast.
SASA said it now expects total sugarcane output to reach 19.20 million tonnes from last month's estimate of 19.33 million tonnes. South Africa's sugarcane production fell by 400,000 tonnes to 19.3 million tonnes in the 2008/09 season compared with the previous season.
