Lawyers movement candidates (which had spearheaded movement for restoration of Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chowdhry for two-years and had succeeded his restoration in March 2009) swept the election of Sindh Bar Council (SBC) and won with majority seats.
There are 33 seats of SBC, including 16 from Karachi, five from Hyderabad division, two Mirpurkhas division six Sukkur division and four from Larkana division.
The polling was held on Saturday, which continued till evening and according to unofficial results available by late last night Fazal Qadir Memon polled highest number of votes that is 632 from Hyderabad division, Muhammad Iqbal Qassar polled 494 votes.
He won Badin/Thatta districts seat. Riazat Saher won from Dadu/Jamshoro seat. Fazal Qadir Memon, Nisar Durrani and Kazi Sattar won from Hyderabad district (old).
Out of five winners from Hyderabad division only one Riazat Saher belongs to PPP while others belong to Lawyers Movement. Allah Bachayo Soomro (additional advocate general) and president of Peoples Lawyers Forum faced defeat.
He had been winning SBC seat from Hyderabad since last more than 20 years. Kazi Sattar, Muhammad Iqbal Kassar and Fazal Qadir Memon are sitting members of SBC. In Sukkur division all 6 seats were won by lawyers belonging to Functional Muslim League of Pir Saheb Pagaro.
They are Mushtaq Shah from Khairpur, Ali Muhammad Daheri from Nawabshah, Abdul Razaq Mehr from Ghotki, Ghulam Abbas from Naushahro Feroz and Qurban Malano from Sukkur However ruling won all 4 seats of Larkana division.
The winners are Ayaz Soomro Sindh minister for law, Asif Soomro. Rehmatullah Nadeem from Jaccobabad. Babar was already elected unopposed. From Mirpurkhas Sher Muhammad Wassan and Ishaq Arain won both seats of Mirpurkhas division.
Out of 16 Karachi seats of SBC, results of 12 were out according to which Mahmoodul Hassain sitting vice chairman of SBC, Iftikhar Javed, Aqil, Mushtaq Jehangiri, Zahoor Mehr, Naeem Qureshi, Haleem Siddiqui, Zia Awan, Muhammad Ali Abbasi, Nadeem Qureshi and Noor Naz Agha have won SBC seats.
Anti-PPP group of lawyers has emerged as majority winners and it is expected that in the first meeting of SBC in January next this group would get their vice chairman elected.
