Rates moved both ways on the currency market on Wednesday amid good supply of US currency, dealers said. On the interbank market the rupee gained two paisa against dollar for buying at 83.50 while it did not show any change for selling at 83.55, they observed. In the third Asian trade dollar ground to its lowest in seven weeks against yen while the Australian dollar rose after a central banker and upbeat construction data supported expectations of a rate rise.
The Reserve Bank of Australia Deputy Governor Ric Battellino said the economy had entered a new growth phase that would last for years, helping push the Australian dollar above $0.9200 and gain on yen on speculation of the third interest rate hike in a row in December.
OPEN MARKET RATES: Declining trend was seen on open market as the rupee shed five paisa against dollar for buying and selling at 83.45 and 83.55, dealers said. The rupee also followed the same path versus euro, falling 80 paisa for buying and selling at Rs 124.20 and Rs 124.70, they said.
