The administration of Punjab University (PU) on Tuesday foiled the attempt by the activists of Islami Jamiat Talba (IJT) to demolish the wall of a room of Punjab University Hostel in a bid to establish their illegal office on PU Campus. The teachers and students of the varsity condemned this illegal activity and termed it "an evil design" to disturb peaceful academic atmosphere of the campus.
They have demanded of the chief minister to direct police to take strict action against responsible ones. The incident took place on Monday night. On the information, the administrative officials of PU reached on the spot where eyewitnesses told them that IJT's workers and expelled students were involved in the incident.
On Tuesday, when a mason from PU Engineering Branch was constructing the wall, some IJT activists threatened him with dire consequences and took him to some unknown place. His whereabouts were unknown until filing of this report. After some time, another mason was hired who started working on the wall, however, on IJT interference he refused to continue and left the job incomplete.
Later, PU teachers and employees themselves constructed the wall. Talking to media on this occasion, Chairman Hall Council Dr Muhammad Akhtar said that IJT activists time and again damaged property of the varsity and tortured students and employees. He said several FIRs and complaints have been registered with the local police stations against them but no action has been taken yet against them.
He demanded the CM to issue a directive to the police to take strict action against those responsible. Adviser Students Iftikhar Ahmad Chaudhry said that some students have been expelled from PU by the Disciplinary Action Committee when they were found involved in illegal activities on the campus.
He said such a decision was taken after receiving complaints from their fellow students, teachers and employees and hearing both parties. He said expelled IJT workers were using unethical language against teachers. Resident Officer Professor Shahid Gul said that these offices were in illegal custody of IJT over the last over 25 years since last year when Vice-Chancellor Dr Mujahid Kamran got these rooms vacated from the custody of IJT. He said these rooms were in use of the staff of Resident Officer-II.
PU spokesman said IJT activists always try to give wrong impression in the media after damaging the PU property. He said IJT workers cut a security barrier last week and threw it in the canal, the report of the incident was also registered in the police station.
