The NWFP government on Wednesday decided to impose fine of Rs 500 on drivers found talking on mobile phones while driving and one-wheeling of motorbikes. The decision was taken during a meeting of the provincial Cabinet held here with Chief Minister Ameer Haider Khan Hoti in the chair.
The objective behind the decision is to save the precious lives of motorists and motorcyclists. Briefing the newsmen regarding decisions taken in the meeting NWFP Minister for Information, Mian Iftikhar Hussain said the Cabinet has also decided to involve private counsel to defend government cases in the courts of law. Decision has been taken to enhance the capacity building of the Law Department.
Regarding entertainment taxes on cinemas, he said that it has been abolished to bolster recreational activities in the province. He said that the Cabinet has also decided to appoint 60 percent PTC teachers on district level basis and 40 percent from union council strictly on merit basis to produce quality academicians to prepare students for future challenges. He said it was a moderate way to tackle this issue. He said ban on transfers of teachers has been imposed and transfers of teachers would be allowed once in a year.
"Those teachers, who approach for transfers, would be suspended," he said. The Information Minister said the tenure of government employees, who are discharging their duties in hard area of the province, has been reduced to one and half year while two years will be mandatory for employees working in soft areas of the province. The decision was taken on the recommendation of transfer policy committee.
After approval of the NWFP Governor, the NWFP information minister said that the number of members of NWFP Public Service Commission (PSC) has been increased from 8 to 10. One male and one female would be added to the commission. The information minister said that it was the 17th meeting of NWFP Cabinet and so far 123 key decisions have been taken in the best interests of public service.
He said that implementation on 109 decisions have already been made. The cabinet has also taken several other decisions in public interests. He further said that the Cabinet offered Fateha and Dua for the departed soul of slain MPA Dr Shamsher Ali Khan and Quran Khwani was held at civil secretariat mosque for the departed soul. He eulogised the political and social role of slain MPA Dr Shamsher Ali Khan and expressed strong determination to bring the killers to justice. He said that ANP had lost two MPAs.
Mian Iftikhar condemned the killing of MPA and demanded strict action against leadership of militants. He demanded of the federal government to give special focus on Waziristan operation so the anti-state elements do not escape to others areas and disturb peace of NWFP and the country at large.
He said that about 270 workers of ANP had lost their lives only in Malakand Division. The NWFP information minister paid rich tributes to the sacrifices of our armed forces and people and held their sacrifices in high esteem. He demanded either elimination of militant leadership or their arrest. He said that terrorism should be brought to its logical end.
