Murder of accused in custody: Supreme Court seeks report from IG Punjab, home secretary

A larger bench of the Supreme Court while proceedings with a suo motu proceedings here on Friday expressed displeasure over police performance to cover up murder of an accused in custody and sought report from Inspector General police Punjab and home secretary within fortnight as how weapons reached inside the lockup.
Bench headed by Justice Khalil-ur-Rehman Ramday was proceedings with a suo moto notice against death of Riaz Shah under mysterious circumstances in a police station of Dera Ghazi (DG) Khan. The courts also directed Sessions judge DG Khan to take up the case and conclude the trial as soon as possible besides submitting a progress report before the court.
DPO DG Khan tried to convince the court that it was not a murder incident as Riaz had committed suicide. His remarks irked the judge who said, " how he (DPO) could determine it as a suicide when two medical reports had denied it." Ramday was astonished when he was told that five policemen were suspended in the case but an inspector Ali Muhammad involved in the case was later granted one-step promotion. The judge made it clear to DPO that he would not hesitate to send him jail to set an example for other police officers and let DPO allow to go only with warning to remain careful in future.
