The local government of the Russian region where 125 people died in a night-club fire quit on Wednesday, in a rare mass resignation after one of the deadliest accidents in Russia's recent history. The resignations in the Urals region of Perm were highly unusual in Russia where top officials have traditionally shied away from taking responsibility for deadly catastrophes that have shocked the country in recent years.
The resignations come after President Dmitry Medvedev - who called Saturday's blaze "beyond good and evil" - told the regional governor Tuesday he expected all those responsible for the blaze to be punished. "In connection with the tragic events of December 5, 2009 the government of the Perm region has taken a decision to resign," said a statement on the website of the regional government.
