A total of 73913 cases of violence against women have been reported in the country during last ten year, said a report released by Human Rights and Legal Committee of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) on violation of human rights.
The report was presented during a seminar on violence against women held under the joint collaboration of Peace and Development Organisation (PADO) and UNIFEM at Union Council, Sheikh Jana in district Swabi.
The report said that out of these cases 13318 women were killed and 4720 were raped and molested while 2176 cases of gang raped were also reported during the decade.
Out of these cases 447 women were killed after sexual exploitation while 7480 women were killed after declaring them as Kari. During the period, 2178 women were burnt alive, 12798 women kidnapped, 10752 committed suicide, 894 were sold out and 945 were compelled on forced marriage. Similarly, 945 women fell victim to the tradition of vani, 1486 faced cases of police torture and 886 women were involved in the Hadood cases.
Addressing the seminar, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Peace and Development Organisation (PADO), Furqanullah said that domestic violence against women left psychological effects on the children.
He said discriminatory treatment on the basis of gender forced children on running from their houses. The elimination of the menace, he said is must for development of a civilised society. He said that fear of torture generates stray boys, who mostly involved in immoral and illegal activities.
He termed the elimination of violence against women as perquisite of the day. He asked youth to come forward and ensure protection of the rights of women and control domestic violence against them.
Speaking on the occasion, Nazim Union Council Sheikh Jana, Iqbal Khan attributed violence against violence shameful act amongst the violation of the human rights.
He urged the government and policy makers for fulfilment of their pledges regarding giving honourable status and guaranteeing of their rights in the country. Participants of the workshop included students of different educational institutions and elders pledged continuation of the struggle for the elimination of the menace of domestic violence against women. They also assured creation of awareness for the control of violence against women.-PR
