In recognition of outstanding performance by the researchers and scholars, the Higher Education Commission (HEC) conferred the first-ever research awards on them here on Thursday. The 24 awardees were selected from different universities and degree awarding institutions under "HEC Outstanding Research Awards" for the year 2005-06.
The awards were distributed in five categories, including Best Research Paper Award, Best Young Research Scholar Award, Best Book Publications Award, Best Innovator Award and Lifetime Achievement Award. While congratulating the winners, Mamoona Hashmi Member National Assembly Standing Committee on Education said, "we must appreciate our scholars performing well despite all odds". Since its inception, the HEC has been doing great work for strengthening of the higher education sector, she added.
She stressed for increasing education budget. "Unless we provide our masses with proper facilities for education, we can not even think of competing with the developed nations, she added. Chairman HEC Dr Javaid Laghari said that the HEC is working on war-footing and has brought about a revolution in the higher education sector. "A culture of research has been created in the universities and despite many problems; HEC has ensured continuation of its programmes.
He said that we must encourage our scholars and researchers for promoting research activities. Chairman said that the purpose of conferring these awards is to motivate research community by recognising their performance and services. The initiative is expected to foster research and development in different fields such as biosciences, basic and applied sciences, engineering and technology, management sciences, social sciences and humanities, Javaid added.
Addressing on this occasion Dr Sohail Naqvi Executive Director HEC said that the commission is focusing on making the universities centers of academic and research excellence. "Research cannot be carried out without a proper environment and HEC has been facilitating individuals and institutions, Naqvi added.
