Officials say 2,089 foreign nationals have accepted money and a free ticket to return home after they lost their jobs in the Czech Republic because of the economic crisis. Interior Minister Martin Pecina says they received ¤500 ($717) per adult or ¤250 ($358) per child from February to July and ¤300 ($430) or ¤150 ($215) from July to December.
Most of the foreigners 1,342 came from Mongolia, followed by Uzbekistan and Vietnam, senior ministry official Tomas Haisman said Thursday. Pecina said the measure was intended to help guest workers, who are usually the first to be laid off in times of rising unemployment and could be targeted by or involved in organised crime. The Czech jobless rate rose to 8.6 percent in November.
