The toll from a landslide brought on by torrential rains in southern Peru has risen to nine dead and 25 wounded, the prime minister said Thursday, with more heavy rains forecast for the days ahead. The victims died when the rains unleashed a torrent of mud and rock in the streets of Ayacucho, where nearly 100 homes were destroyed and the city's sewer system was paralysed when the downtown was coated in a thick layer of mud.
The victims included four men and two women whose car was buried by the flood of mud and debris in the city centre on Wednesday night.
