The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Criminal Prosecution Services Department Sindh Circle is finding it extremely difficult to resuscitate the corruption cases due to an acute shortage of special prosecutors. Sources in Criminal Prosecution Services Department NAB Sindh Chapter told Business Recorder that the department might not be able to reopen cases as quickly as desired or ordered by the apex court due to a serious lack of resources and required manpower, they said.
The criminal prosecution services department is performing its functions with only four public prosecutors, or with a strength which is not even sufficient for the ongoing cases in the accountability courts. "There is, therefore, an urgent need of at least 14 special prosecutors in the department to dispose of the corruption cases as quickly as possible," they said.
Meanwhile four accountability courts of Karachi have virtually stopped functioning due to absence or unavailability of judges and working staff while the fourth has to restart high profile corruption cases. One court has virtually ceased to function on account of absence of a judge while the remaining three courts were facing shortage of judges and workforce. The courts are also faced with the shortage of readers, stenographers and office boys.
