The Interior Ministry has asked the Capital Development Authority (CDA) to recruit a special security force for the security of the Federal Capital, APP learnt here on Monday. The force would assist the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) Administration and police in strengthening the security of the important government buildings, public places, roads and underpasses and flyovers, sources said.
In addition to this, they said that a project title "Safe City" is also being devised to strengthen the security of all important cities of the country especially the federal and the provincial capitals. A special committee is working on the feasibility and the PC-1 of the project, to be funded by the Chinese government, the sources said adding that initially the project would be started from Lahore and subsequently extended to Islamabad, Karachi, Peshawar and Quetta.
The sources further said that as part of the security measures, the Civil Defence force is also being activated with modern training and equipment to cope with any emergency, incident or disaster. At present around 300 personnel of the Civil Defence force are assisting the security of the educational institutions, they added.
In order to curb the incident of terrorism, the government is also promoting the "community policing" project to build the confidence of the public on police force and to encourage them to keep an eye on suspicious activities and voluntarily provide inform to police without any fear.
It is pertinent to mention here that Interior Minister A Rehman Malik has announced a reward of Rs 500,000 to citizens who would provide video or photograph captured by video equipment or cellular phones which might lead to the arrest or detection of any act of terror or heinous crime. The persons eligible for the reward would also be offered a job in the local police or the FIA, the sources said.
