At least 13 people died after drinking locally brewed liquor, apparently tainted with lethal chemicals, here on Sunday. Four more people were admitted to Nishtar Hospital where doctors described their condition as critical. CPO Multan Syed Saud Aziz said, "Police have arrested a bootlegger Mehboob Ahmed alias Sadar who had supplied the toxic liquor and seized eight drums of alcohol."
He further said that police had taken this toxic liquor on Friday night in a marriage ceremony of Khadim Hussain's son. When their condition started deteriorating on Saturday, their family members rushed them to private clinic to escape from the police proceedings.
Six of them died at the private clinic on Sunday and the rest died at the emergency ward of the Nishtar Hospital. Those who died are identified as Muhammad Yamin, Shaheen, Inayat Ali, Asif Ali, Hayat-ullah Patwari, Abdul Waheed, Muhammad Saeed, Mushtaq Ahmed, Muhammad Rafique, Altaf Hussain,Hidayat-ullah, and Bhola.
Commissioner Multan Syed Muhammasd Ali Gardezi said, "An inquiry has been ordered into the manufacturing of liquor in different areas of Multan with the connivance of police and death of a dozen people in Sharifpura. At least 36 people have died so far in Multan after taking toxic liquor in the year 2009.
On September 5, 2004, eighteen people reportedly died after consuming toxic liquor in Multan and its peripheral areas, Kot Adu and Jatoi tehsils of district Muzaffargarh during the last 24 hours, hospital sources said. Chief Medical Officer of Emergency Ward of Nishtar Hospital Multan said deceased were between 25 to 35 of age, all from lower middle class.
Seven of them died while being provided medical treatment and two others lost lives before they could reach the hospital. On September 22, 2007 13 people died after drinking toxic liquor in Karachi, taking the death toll to 50, police said.
