Facilitating Sikh community: EPTB directed to establish Gurmukhi School, renovate Gurdwara
Punjab Governor Salman Taseer has ordered Evacuee Property Trust Board (EPTB) to establish Gurmukhi School for Sikh children and renovate Gurdwara, located in Model Town, to facilitate the Pakistani Sikh community. He said this during his meeting with a five-member Sikh delegation, headed by Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbhandak Committee (PSGPC) President Sardar Bishan Singh, at the Governor House on Monday.
"Islam is a complete code of life and protects and respects the rights of minorities at par with the majority", he said. The Governor said that the PPP government was committed to facilitate the minorities living in Pakistan, as well as protect their religious freedom.
The minorities are as patriotic as any other Pakistani, he added. PSGPC President told Governor Punjab that there were only three Ghurmukhi schools in Pakistan in the cities of Nankana Sahib and Peshawar, which impart education to the Sikh children. He said the EPTB and PSGPC had established the school at Nankana where Sikh children are taught Gurmukhi as a separate subject from their Holy book, Guru Granth Sahib.
He thanked the PPP government for extending an all out support to the Sikh minority in Pakistan. City District Nazim Lahore Mian Amir Mehmood, Chairman EPTB Asif Hashmi and President Model Town Society Colonel Tahir Kardar (Retd) were also present in the meeting.
