CNG Owners Association Multan Chapter has opposed the suspension of gas supply for two days to the gas filling stations and asked the government to introduce only one day (24 hours) discontinuation otherwise they would be forced to close their business.
Ghiyas-uddin Paracha Chairman of the association said that they would close their business after December 30 while they would stop the payment of bills from December 29th. He further said, "we have rejected the increase in gas prices from January Ist, 2010 describing it unjust and illogical.
He said that a special meeting of CNG owners was convened on December 23rd in Islamabad to set the future strategy. Chairman CSOAP said that this strike call would be given in December 23rd meeting with the consent of all members in the interest of CNG station owners and dealers and dispelled this impression that it will serve the government's interest of resorting to load shedding.
He said that both the associations are opposing gas load shedding for CNG stations and also increase in the price of natural gas. He said that there was no load shedding in Sindh and Balochistan why the load shedding was observed in Punjab and NWFP, he asked?
Ghiyas urged the government not to raise gas prices because "CNG Policy 1992" envisages a price difference of 50 percent to ensure the consumers should get a cheaper fuel. He pointed out that in February 2007, the government had changed the CNG tariff from industrial category to above commercial category which is exorbitant and against the policy.
He rejected the statement of Finance Minister in which he supported the idea to take CNG rates closer to petrol and promote the use of petrol among motorists. He was of the view that some elements in the government were bent upon destroying CNG industry which will not only hurt 3 million users but affect environment.
