Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) Quaid Nawaz Sharif feared on Friday that the government was not looking serious in addressing major challenges being faced by the country and the nation.
In his separate meetings with Federal Minister for Railways Haji Ghulam Ahmed Bilour and provincial advisor Ashfaq Sarwar, Nawaz Sharif said government was not looking serious and committed in ensuring Parliament's supremacy, restoration of Constitution as on October 12, 1999, implementation of Charter of Democracy, check on corruption, media freedom and overcoming price hike in the country.
He said the post-NRO verdict statements of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leaders are resulting into public anxiety and expressed the hope that the Prime Minister would play effective role in implementing the historic verdict of the apex court. He termed the apex court's verdicts on NRO and loans written off as step forward in the direction of supremacy of Constitution and law besides democracy's strength in the country and in line with the public aspirations. He said implementation on the Supreme Court verdict would improve country's stature and discourage the corrupt elements of the society.
According to him, one reason behind the burgeoning problems of the country was negative attitude of the government, being adopted in the case of Charter of Democracy (CoD) and other written agreements. He lamented that the country was still being run on distorted Constitution of Pervez Musharraf despite the passage of 20 months of present government. Even, no development is ensured on an independent accountability process agreed under the CoD, he said, adding: The 17th amendment is yet part of the Constitution and the simplest process of its abolition has been complicated by attaching it with a wider scope Constitutional reforms.
He said the country is losing its direction, as the elders of the nation had dreamt of security of people, preservation of minority's rights, discouragement of bribery, corruption and nepotism, and end of racial, regional and linguistic biases. According to him, sitting idle simply because of snail pace developments on these objectives was not ideal situation and the nation cannot withdraw from building up and great Islamic republic state ahead.
He further said the nation cannot surrender in front of the internal and external threats, and we would have to burn the midnight oil in order to pursue the dreams of our forefathers and materialise them accordingly. He said the nation would have to resist the onslaught of corruption and approach of inactivity of the day to meet with its national obligations.
The PML-N was not ignorant of its role on this front, he stressed. Nawaz Sharif urged the government to redo its priority list and curb the factors generating uncertainty, ultimately leading to weakening democracy in the country. Both Ghulam Ahmed Bilour and Ashfaq Sarwar discussed issues of mutual interest and wished happy birthday to PML-N Quaid. Bilour also communicated a message of his party leadership to the PML-N Quaid on the occasion.
