Thousands of people, including 450 prisoners, were evacuated after an unexploded World War II bomb was found in the northern German town of Vechta on Sunday. The authorities moved 8,500 people living within a 1-kilometre radius of the site, including the residents of two prisons and a care home in the town, 60 kilometres south-west of Bremen.
From midday, bomb disposal experts will attempt to defuse the aerial bomb. If this is unsuccessful, they plan to carry out a controlled explosion.
