Road accidents - almost half of them blamed on drunk driving - claimed 77 lives in Thailand on New Year's Eve, a government official said Friday. A total of 709 road accidents were reported on New Year's Eve, killing 77 people and injuring another 763 others, according to Civil Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Director-General Anucha Mokhaves.
Anucha said altogether 168 people had died and 1,988 were injured in road accidents between Tuesday and Thursday, when millions of Thais hit the highways to celebrate the New Year with their parents and families in the provinces, The Nation newspaper's website said.
