Sugar crisis has again surfaced in NWFP as the price of commodity has touched Rs 70 per kilogram in the open market against the rate fixed by the government at Rs 38 per kg. Reason for price hike is being attributed to low sugarcane yield this year. Sugar in the provincial capital is being sold at Rs 65 to Rs 70 per kg. According to market sources, sugar mills have to purchase sugarcane at Rs 150 to Rs 160 per maund while the government has set its support price at Rs 102 to Rs 103.
The sources said the government has decided to import one million tones of sugar during the current year. Sugar price would be stabilised after the imported sugar lands in the local market.
