An eight-year old student, Ghulam Sarwar, was tortured to death by Qari Abdul Rehman, a teacher of a religious seminary in Mankot (Kabirwala), some 50 km east of Multan, according to DPO Khanewal Muhammad Kamran Khan. He said, "We have taken the teacher in our custody but the father of the ill-fated student, Sana-ullah, pardoned him. Consequently, we have released him."
The police chief said that Ghulam Sarwar (8) was beaten up by his teacher for not learning from holy Quran. As a result of beating, when his condition deteriorated, other students took him to a private clinic where he died before getting any medical aid. A number of students have so died of maltreatment by the teachers of religious seminaries in southern Punjab.
Another incident took place on December 21, 2009, when a seven-year old student, Ghulam Rasul, was beaten to death by his teachers, while another student was in critical condition, for not learning the Holy Qur'an in Hujra Shah Muqueen village (Deepalpur) of Okara district, on Friday. The tragic incident took place at a mosque-school of Deepalpur where both students were learning the Holy Qur'an by heart.
The victim's father, Liaquat Ali, told newsmen that his son Ghulam Rasul and a nephew Abrar Ahmed were learning Holy Qur'an where two teachers Liaquat Ali and Tariq Ali beat them brutally. The students fell unconscious and were taken to hospital where poor Ghulam Rasul died. The teachers, however, did not inform the parents about the death.
After eight hours, hospital sources released the information. DPO Okara Bilal Saddique Kamyana said,"A murder case was instituted against both teachers of the religious seminary, who could not be apprehended." Similarly, in another sad incident, a seven-year-old blind child was beaten to death by his teacher for not learning the Holy Qur'an in Vehari on May 30, 2008.
