Construction of Khan Khwar Dam will be completed by February 2010 while work on Allai Khwa Dam will be over by October 2011, with the two projects scheduled to add altogether 193 mega-watt of electricity to the country's power transmission system. "Work on both the dams was initiated in June 2003 and was set to be completed in June 2006." sources told APP here on Saturday.
They said construction work could not be completed on the fixed date, which was then extended to February 2010 and October 2011 for the two dams, respectively. The sources said Khan Khwar dam was having 30-meter height and 4,540-meter length of "headrace" tunnel, adding that its preliminary cost (PC) was estimated Rs 5,362.70 million. "Rs 5104.09 has been spent on the project so far and the government has allocated Rs 1,575 million under the Public Sector Development Programme," they added.
They said the project envisages installation of 72-mw hydropower plant along with allied transmission and grid facility. The plant would generate 306 Gwh per annum of electricity, they added. The sources said "tailrace" cofferdam filling, access road to access adit to portal of HRT, and access tunnel to pressure tunnel (excavation) have already been completed, besides rock excavation.
Similarly, the Allai Khwa Dam has 32.50 meter height and 2366 meter length, adding that its preliminarily cost (PC) was estimated at Rs 8,577.824 million. "Rs 5880.439 has been spent on the project so far and the government has allocated Rs 2,335 million under Public Sector Development Programme," they added. The sources said access roads to weir and powerhouse have been substantially completed. The government has expedited work on the dams in order to get help mitigate load shedding and generate hydel electricity.
