The Lahore High Court (LHC) here Monday heard a petition against spurious bottled drinking water and called for report from Secretary Public Health Engineering Department and Director Pakistan Council for Water Resources about the samples of bottled drinking water examined in the recent past.
The court also directed amicus curie Barrister Sidar, to inspect water plants of two private bottled drinking water supplying companies. The court also directed her to submit a report in this regard on next date of hearing. The court passed these directions in a petition filed by Watan Party Pakistan through its president Barrister Zafarullah Khan.
Petitioner pleaded that he felt aggrieved by the supply of bottled water by various companies, which was adulterated, contaminated, stale and filtered tap water. He said the plastic bottles carrying water, which made of polyethylene, had been linked with breast and uterine cancer. It also increased risk of miscarriage and decreased testosterone levels and interferes with body's natural hormonal messaging system.
According to scientists, petitioner said, when bottled water stored in hot or warm temperatures the plastic could easily leach chemicals in the water. Petitioner prayed to the court that all bottled water should be tested from reliable laboratories before supplying for human consumption.
