Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Punjab marked the 82nd birth anniversary of late Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto with traditional zeal and fervour, cutting cakes at different places in the town besides organising seminars and gatherings to eulogise the remarkable efforts of their beloved leader.
The provincial leadership including Punjab Senior Minister Raja Riaz Ahemd, President PPP Punjab Rana Aftab Ahmed and other senior provincial leaders besides the party Secretary General Jehangir Badr and Governor Punjab Salman Taseer remained busy throughout the day to attend cake cutting ceremonies and addressing the party workers in the city.
Benazir Bhutto's political secretary Naheed Khan also visited the city along with her husband Senator Safdar Abbasi to mark the occasion especially. A good number of party workers joined the couple and paid glowing tributes to the party martyrs.
There was a general impression that the PPP workers have become charged extraordinary with mounting pressure on their leadership in Islamabad, who has rebounded his critics fiercely during last two weeks.
It may be noted that the PPP Co-chairman and President Asif Ali Zardari has been under strong media trial throughout 2009. He has, however, retaliated forcefully to his opponents at the death anniversary of Benazir Bhutto on December 27 at Garhi Khuda Bakhsh, which has instilled a new vigour and passion among party workers.
They said the Pakistan People's Party is proud to be the representing voice of the poor, middle and working classes of the people. Quaid-e-Awam Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto defended the rights of the people till death instead of bending in front of tyranny.
The provincial party leadership said that Shaheed Bhutto struggled for a democratic and developed Pakistan. He gave Pakistan its nuclear programme. He fought for the rights of the poor and labour class and raised the slogan of Roti, Kapra aur Makaan. Shaheed Bhutto initiated administrative reforms, they added.
They further said that Shaheed Bhutto held Islamic Summit in 1974 to unite the Muslim world and it was Shaheed Bhutto who negotiated the return of 93,000 Pakistani soldiers, and it was also Shaheed Bhutto whose efforts let the nation have a unanimous constitution in 1973.
According to them, the present government is taking the mission of Shaheed Bhutto ahead under the guidance of the President, Asif Ali Zardari and the Prime Minister, Yousuf Raza Gilani. The government enjoys full support of the public. They said that the government is following a policy of reconciliation. We gave Balochistan its rights. We freed all political prisoners and we are taking the nation along with us in the war against terrorism.
