US rice futures on the Chicago Board of Trade closed mixed on Wednesday in thin, choppy trade, with the benchmark March contract settling unchanged. Softening Asian cash prices hung over the market, with Vietnam eyeing record high exports. CBOT January settled up 1 cent at $14.78 per hundredweight, with March unchanged at $15.09-1/2.
Back months closed up 1 cent to down 13-1/2 cents. CBOT estimated volume at 738 futures and 65 options. USDA reported the weekly world price for long grain rough rice at $13.62 per hundredweight, unchanged from the previous week. Cambodia aims for 700,000 tonnes 2010 rice exports. India buys 16.5 million tonnes rice from domestic farmers. Deliveries on CBOT January total nine contracts. Open interest in January was down to 233 contracts ahead of Wednesday's open.
