World Peace Movement (WPM) would build an old home to provide multifarious services for the well-being of senior citizens, on self-help basis, in the Federal Capital soon. "Initially, about 40 elderly persons will be accommodated in the old home and its capacity will be enhanced up to 400 persons," WPM President and renowned social figure Malik Amjad Alvi told APP, here on Sunday.
He informed that a suitable piece of land has already been acquired while all the necessary arrangements have been completed for construction of the building. WPM President further said that his organisation has also constituted a free legal bench for assistance of prisoners who are languishing in different jails for minor crimes or not being able to pay fines, after the completion of their imprisonment period. He said so far, several prisoners have got released from the Haripur jail and added that he, along with his team, would also undertake a visit of Adiyala jail to find and help such prisoners.
Alvi, who is also the President of Amnesty International Islamabad Chapter, vowed to work for the rights of consumers in the Federal Capital. He observed that the benefit of reduction in the prices of various commodities should be passed on to the consumers. Citing examples of petroleum products and edible oil, he said the prices of these items were reduced at the global markets but the benefit was not passed on to the consumers properly.
Commenting on the trade activities in the backdrop of the prevailing law and order situation, he stressed the security arrangements should further be beefed up aimed at ensuring protection of life and property of the common man. Lauding the services of the armed forces and police in the fight against terrorism, he underlined the need for addressing the root cause of extremism and terrorism. He opined that poverty is one of the major reasons, adding, "several programs initiated by the government for poverty alleviation are the steps in right direction."
About civic facilities in the urban and rural areas of the federal capital, Alvi urged that basic facilities like Sui gas and electricity should be ensured in the rural areas in a bid to stop population growth in the cities. Towns like Bhara Kahu should be given proper attention and provided with all the modern facilities. He appreciated the chairman Capital Development Authority (CDA) for providing equal facilities in all the sectors and said, "now G and I sectors have also been upgraded and new schools buildings and playgrounds have been constructed in these sectors."
