A town in Jordan has decided not to rename one of its neighbourhoods after former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, an official confirmed Sunday - reportedly after pressure from Iraq and Kuwait. The municipal council of al-Mazar, 120 kilometres south of Amman, had originally decided on January 2 to rename a neighbourhood in the late Iraqi's honour.
However, after a public petition, and - according to local media - diplomatic arm-twisting from the Iraqi authorities, that decision was reversed, the Minister of State for Information Affairs and Communication Nabil Sharif told Ammon news agency.
Kuwaiti Ambassador Faisal al-Sabah dropped strong hints that he was behind the reversal of the step when he told the Kuwait News Agency, Kuna, that he had been assured by the Jordanian Prime Minister Samir Rifari that the idea of naming the neighbourhood after Saddam would be dropped bbecause it was ill-considered Saddam was executed in December 2006.
