Secretary Ministry of Environment Kamran Lashari on Monday said that the government would have to immediately shift its focus on alternate fuels including ethanol for safer environment and consumer-friendly fuels as hike in CNG prices had reduced the gap between petrol and CNG prices.
"CNG vehicles were a major step by the government in achieving environment friendly atmosphere. However, "I am afraid we are loosing this achievement." People had adopted CNG conservation methods for safer environment and cheaper CNG prices," he said while talking to APP here after the inauguration of Model Motor Vehicles Tune-up Center.
Earlier, the secretary inaugurated the state-of-the-art Tune-up center, the first of its type in the capital. The secretary was informed that the center would start formal functioning after one week's delay and this was only symbolic launch. Lashari said that the launch of the tune-up center was a step in the right direction, which would help build pollution-free safe environment in the country.
He said this was another example of public-private partnership and only taking the private sector on board could help resolve the environmental issues as the government alone could not meet the challenge of pollution. "I hope this tune-up model would go a long way in resolving the environmental issues and a network of such tune-up stations should be expanded across country," he said.
Managing Director, Energy Conservation Fund (ECF), Faridullah Khan briefed the secretary over the state-of-the-art tune-up system. He said the motor vehicle ordinance would soon be expanded to the four provinces so as only those vehicles could come on roads, which have proper fitness certificates along from such stations. Major Asif (Retd) also briefed the secretary over the functioning of the center.
He said the public sector hand in hand with UNDP had launched this initiative and more such centres would be installed soon. The chief guest was also given a practical demonstration over the functioning of the tune-up center. Expressing his concern over the high prices, the secretary directed the officials to lower down the prices of tune-up center so as not only this center could benefit only elite groups and rather common citizens could also benefit from such centres.
