Deputy Inspector General of Police Rawalpindi Rao Muhammad Iqbal on Tuesday said that police have busted a gang which was involved in abducting women from various parts of country and selling them in Nawab Shah, Sindh. Talking to the reporters at the Traffic Headquarters, he said that a woman belonging to Rawalpindi has recently been freed from their custody.
To a question, the Deputy IG said there was a conducive environment for holding by-elections in NA-55 constituency and there was no need to call either the army or the rangers. The police would provide full protection for political activities in the areas, however, he said the contesting candidates would not be provided any police squad.
He dispelled the impression that the Rawalpindi Police had any political affiliation and said it was not supporting any political party in the upcoming by-elections. To another question he said police and other security agencies were jointly conducting enquiries into the Rawalpindi attacks at General Headquarters, Parade Lane Mosque and National Bank of Pakistan.
He revealed that suspects have also been arrested, but did not give their links, saying it could affect the investigation process. Talking about the recent suspected hand grenade blast in Sadiqabad, he said initial reports revealed that it was thrown into the shop and was not carried by the policeman.
The Deputy IG disclosed that the Inspector General of Police Tariq Saleem Dogar has directed the police to check the growing car theft cases in Rawalpindi. In compliance with his orders, anti-car lifting cells have been established at all the police stations and the cell's officials would be suspended if any car was stolen, he informed.
Responding to a question, Rao Muhammad Iqbal said that the local leaders including MNAs and MPAs assist the police in deputing Station House Officers (SHOs) by telling the police about their character. He said not a single foreigner was getting religious education or any illegal Afghan national was residing in the country. Chief Traffic Officer Dr Abbas, Superintendent of Police (SP) Potohar Kamran Adil, SP Ishtiaq Shah and SP Ahmed Chohan were also present on the occasion.
