Nazim Karachi Syed Mustafa Kamal on Tuesday handed over keys of nine gutted markets including Lunda Bazaar market to the shop owners after their reconstruction. Nazim also laid the foundation stone of reconstruction of Quetta market, which was destroyed in the tragedy, and construction of 20 other dilapidated buildings started.
He said the city government has 20 organisations with it to reconstruct all the dilapidated buildings and the work will start as soon as the buildings are handed over to them after the survey. He was speaking on the occasion of a ceremony at which he handed over keys of renovated shops of gutted markets to their owners at Boulton Market.
DCO Karachi Javed Hanif Khan, Nazim Saddar Town Mohammed Dilawar and MD KESC Tabish Gohar and other officers besides large number of area people were also present on the occasion. Nazim Karachi said he was convinced from day one that "we will restore the usual trading activities of gutted M A Jinnah road markets and we achieved the success in this just within 20 days because of the guidance and vision of Quaid-e-Tehreek Altaf Hussain."
He said that during his four years tenure of Nizamat, he never found Altaf Hussain so perturbed and concerned than he saw during the 20 days of rehabilitation of affected traders. MD KESC Tabis Gohar announced that electricity bills of affected shopkeepers for four months are being waived of while KESC has spent Rs 10 million on providing new meters. On the occasion he also announced distribution of 10,000 energy savers among affected shopkeepers and said KESC was in contact with the Nazim and consultations continue with him on the rehabilitation of Boulton market.
