President Asif Ali Zardari on Wednesday inaugurated the Rs 1.08 billion bridge over River Sutlej and optic fibre broadband internet link for southern Punjab. The President who was scheduled to travel to Minchanabad had to cancel his trip owing to heavy fog and performed the ceremony at the Governor's House.
The 572-metre long bridge will shorten the distance between Minchanabad and Pakpattan by 70 kms and benefit the local farmers by reducing the input cost and providing easy access to the market. The area is known for wheat, rice, sugarcane and cotton growing areas and the dairy industry.
The President directed that 8 km approach roads to the bridge be completed on priority so that the large population living on either side particularly in Okara, Sahiwal, Bhawalnagar benefits from the new link. President Zardari also performed the groundbreaking of the Rs 2 billion optic fibre broadband internet link for South Punjab.
The connectivity would link community centres, schools, colleges and universities in a year's time. The President directed that the pace of the project be hastened so that the people are connected with the rest of the country and the world.
