The Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Admiral Noman Bashir, has underscored the need of investing in country's youth by providing them opportunities of quality education of international standards and groom them to understand diversity of the global environment. He was speaking as chief guest at the 6th Convocation of Bahria University at its Karachi campus on Wednesday.
The Bahria University Karachi conferred 213 Bachelors and 152 Masters degrees in various disciplines including BBA, MBA, MS Telecom and Networking, SSE and BCE to its passing out graduates of 2008 and 2009 in its 6th convocation. It also awarded five gold, four silver medals and four merit certificates to its outstanding students who had secured top positions in different disciplines.
Asma Bashir of BBA, Hunzah Ghulam of BBA, Tahir Mumtaz Malik MBA and Mariam Gazdar of MBA and Fizza Khorasany of BSE received the gold medals on showing outstanding performance. While, Maham Bahram of BBA, Sadaf Saleem of BBA, Asma Razaq of MBA and Kunwer Sufian Shahid of MBA received silver medals from the chief guest.
While extending his heartiest felicitations to all recipients of the degrees and medals, Admiral Noman Bashir said that country was passing through a crucial time of our history and our youth make an overwhelming majority of the present population of the country. He stated that the future of our country would largely depend on the way "we educate them and that we need to invest in them in terms of quality education of the international standards and to groom them to understand the diversity of the global environment."
Admiral Noman Bashir was of the view that the universities and institutes of higher education had great responsibility to provide wholesome education to students with clear sense of direction and well defined goals.
With the premise that our national interests, cultural and religious ethos, were always safeguarded, the students should also be taught to respect global values and traditions, he added. He said that the universities should also frequently interact with local industries and other corporate and public sector organisations to improve their curriculum in order to make it more responsive to the employers needs.
Admiral Noman Bashir stated that most of the students invariably require additional training and grooming for better participation and output in their respective work places. That was where additional efforts by the universities should be made to prepare the students for varies types of jobs, he added. He said that the accelerated pace of development, which the University management had embarked upon would Inshallah soon make the Bahria University one of the best universities in the country.
Admiral Noman Bashir said that the addition of the Faculty of Medical and Dental Sciences, establishment of the Bahria University Medical and Dental College was highly appreciated. Rector, Bahria University Vice Admiral Mohammad Haroon (Retd), said that higher education was now accepted, as engine of economic growth the world over thus universities had great responsibility of producing quality graduates who could contribute positively in varied fields for economic growth of the country.
He said that our vision was to prepare our students for the national as well as global market, while maintaining the quality of education. Admiral Haroon informed that Bahria University had greatly improved its academic infrastructure, faculty development, revision of curriculum and introduction of additional academic disciplines.
