European Commission (EC) and OXFAM GB team up to allocate 2.29 million Euros for food insecure districts of Sindh and Balochistan like Sanghar, Dadu and Musakheal' says Fatima Naqvi, Programme Manager of Land Rights and Economic Opportunities department of OXFAM-GB. She was addressing the participants of a three-day workshop on "Enhance Food Security and Resilience of Small farmers" co-funded by EC and OXFAM GB.
The participants from the local NGOs, Participatory Development Initiative (PDI), Sindh Agriculture Forestry Workers Organisation (SAFWCO) and Balochistan Educational and Environmental Journey (BEEJ) attended the workshop organised by OXFAM-GB on January 19 at a local hotel at Hyderabad. The workshop will conclude on Friday (today).
In her welcome address she told the participants of the workshop that the aim of the project was a step towards poverty alleviation especially focusing on the marginalised and vulnerable communities involved in agriculture and bring revolutionary steps in agricultural sectors with the support of stakeholders in the agriculture sector. She pointed out that food inflation had increased upto 29.9 percent from July 2008 to February 2009, which affected millions of people.
Farooq Dar, Funding Manager Oxfam GB said that in order to address the problems faced by poor peasants, EC and OXFAM GB have funded a two-year project on food security from January 2010 till October 2011 to contribute to the mitigation of the negative effects of volatile food prices on people in Pakistan.
Sumayya Sajjad, Programme Co-ordinator stressed that the prime object of the project is to improve the livelihood in food insecure areas and to introduce low external input sustainable agriculture methods in agriculture sector in effected districts of the Pakistan.-PR
