Despite the financial meltdown confronting the country, the Ministry of Health is confident of completing its all scheduled health projects timely to facilitate the suffering humanity.
"Although, the Ministry of Finance has directed all the ministries to review their development projects under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) 2009-10, slashing their budget by 30 percent, but we are hopeful that our allocated funds would not be cut," Director General Health Rasheed Juma said while talking to APP here on Saturday.
He informed that Health Minister Makhdoom Shahbuddin has made a special request to the Prime Minister to exempt his ministry from this rationalisation as its projects are directly linked with common man and treatment of patients suffering from chronic diseases.
Rasheed said the Ministry was allocated around Rs 23.154 billion under the PSDP to execute its various projects. Another official source in the Ministry said that the allocated budget was already insufficient so there is no question of any slash, rather "we hope that further allocation would be made for the ministry."
The Ministry is working on eleven new projects including upgradation of Cancer Treatment Facility at Nishtar Hospital, establishment of medical colleges at Khuzdar and Loralai, establishment of 300-bed maternal hospital with child health institute at District Benazirabad; 300-bed hospital with trauma centre in Karachi, 150-bed DHQ hospital, Palndri, Benazir Medical College, Gujranwala; extension and development of BMC Complex and cancer hospital in Quetta; PM's Emergency Action Plan for Hepatitis and establishment of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Medical Complex at National Highway Karachi. While, out of total 67 ongoing projects of the ministry, 13 are of national-level health programmes.
