Minister for Environment Hamidullah Jan Afridi on Wednesday urged a comprehensive awareness strategy for behavioural change to meet environmental challenges as well as Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). "There is significant stress on provision of safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene related issues that calls for behavioural change through awareness," the minister said addressing the Consultative Meeting for the National Behavioural Change Communication Strategy (NBCCS).
He said such campaign was vital to address these issues and hoped, "the NBCCS will provide an over-arching national strategy and conceptual framework with a set of recommendations and considerations for national strategy." "We are sure that successful implementation of NBCCS would help Pakistan achieving the MDGs for improving access to safe drinking water and sanitation as well as to reduce mortality rate of children under age of 15," he added.
Afridi called upon the stake holders to make NBCCS a guiding document for countrywide communication and ensure participation of all concerned at the government and civil society level. The meeting was informed that NBCCS would help Pakistan address fundamental challenge of clean drinking water, better sanitation and hygiene issues.
The overall goal of the strategy is to reduce the morbidity and mortality caused by faecal-oral contamination from poor sanitation and hygiene and a lack of access to safe drinking water. The goal will be achieved through two outcome areas each with multiple objectives. The first outcome area is focussed on processes of a co-ordinated multi-sectoral approach, to ensure the activities of the strategy and 'make available resources and leverages a commitment' from all relevant stakeholders to make the strategy successful.
