Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has urged the United Nations Procurement Department (UNPD) to enhance the current level of procurement from Pakistan by it. In a communiqué, President KCCI, Abdul Majid Haji Mohammad said that the statistics of procurement of United Nations indicated that 6.3 million dollar procurement was made from Pakistan last year, which happened to be 0.20 percent of the total UN annual procurements of over 2 billion dollars.
He recommended to the UN that existing level of procurement must be enhanced particularly with regards to UN supplies to Afghanistan. "Pakistan is very much ideal place to ship the goods out of there as compared to other countries. More importantly, Pakistan having border links with Afghanistan can save shipping costs as well," he added.
"As far as the trade potential of Pakistan is concerned, Pakistan is 3rd largest exporter of quality rice, having leading position in textile exports, fisheries, leather, surgical goods, sports goods etc, are some of the areas wherein Pakistan can contribute significantly," KCCI President added.
Pakistan, being a developing nation and strong ally on war on terror, truly needed international assistance with regards to trade and business, he said. He said that the cost with which Pakistan fighting this war was much higher with regards to Pakistan's own resources, whereas the benefits were being enjoyed the whole world especially the west.
