Inspector General of Police (IGP) Islamabad Kaleem Imam has expressed the resolve to hold thorough search of the religious seminaries in Islamabad to find out if there are any people with the extremist background.
"We had made a plan in consultation with Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration to conduct search and surveillance of religious seminaries in the capital", Imam said while talking to the reporters after the passing out ceremony of second batch of Anti Terrorism Squad at Police Lines Headquarters, on Thursday. He said that Islamabad Police is working effectively to deal with terrorism and with enhanced vigilance, the incidents of terrorism were brought under control.
Responding to a question regarding the killing of former Peshawar High Court judge Muhammad Sardar Khan in Islamabad, he said that the incident of Mohammad Sardar Khan's murder was not a target killing. However, the incident is under investigation and very shortly, results will be brought to public and culprits will be brought to task, he added.
Addressing the officials of the passing out ceremony, the IGP said that effective training, determination and commitment can help strengthen the law enforcement organisations and play effective role in maintaining the law and order situation and controlling the crime.
He further said Islamabad Police will undergo refresher courses of anti-terrorism and other programmes to meet the requirement of present scenario of terrorism with effective and better training skills. Through capacity building and courses of the officers, the police can be strengthened to deal with the terrorist and criminals and would also be able to control any untoward law and order situation in the capital, he observed.
He said that the anti-terrorism training can play an effective role in countering terrorism and in the present scenario, it was the need of the hour. The refreshers courses on the patron of French, American, German and England are being conducted at Police Line to train the Islamabad police for better result in countering terrorism and crime, besides, its other working, the IGP added.
He said 48 personnel got training in the ATS second batch by 4 highly skilled officers of capital police. The newly trained batch will strengthen the city police to ensure security of people and sensitive installations.
During the last 8 months, a strategy was prepared for setting up checkpoints in capital to make it more effective, the IGP said, adding that officials deployed at the checkpoints were also trained in different skills and courses, including their behaviour for the people.
During the period, the city police received 408 alerts regarding terrorist activities and out of the total 98 percent, 401 were averted due to better and effective strategy, he added. Earlier, the newly trained ATS personnel presented demonstration of firing, VVIP protection, room combat, VIP walking formation, vehicle formation, and bus assault (hostage situation).
