A worker of Pakistan People's Party (PPP) was killed in a clash between PPP and Muslim Conference workers during the by-election for a vacant seat of AJK Legislative Assembly. According to police and Hospital sources, Captain Tariq (Retd) was died on the spot as a bullet hit him on the head, and his body was shifted to Pakistan Institute of Medical Science (PIMs).
The incident took place at Melody polling station, where two rival groups started chanting slogans against each other, which ensued a fight with sticks and bricks.
During the fight, some unknown persons opened fire on Tariq and he died on the spot. An FIR was registered in Aabpara police station, wherein two AJK Ministers-Murtaza Gilani and Raja Nasir, were nominated. Police raided AJK House late on Sunday night to arrest the minister, however, till our going to press there was report whether they were arrested or not.
Taking serious note of the incident and failure of police to control the situation, Interior Minister Rehman Malik suspended SHO Aabpara Police Station and a Magistrate on duty. He also transferred the area DSP and directed the concerned authorities to submit an inquiry report of the incident within three days.
In the by-election, Muslim Conference leader Ahmed Qadri and PPP candidate Abdul Salam Butt were contesting for LA-40 valley-5 seat, which was fallen vacant after the death of Sanaullah Qadri of Muslim Conference in 2008 and elections could not be held in the wake of law and order situation. As many as 23 poling stations were established from Rawalpindi to Jehlum to allow the Kashmiri migrants to poll their votes. According to unofficial results, Muslim Conference candidate Ahmed Qadri won the poll by securing 2,164 votes and his rival candidate Abdul Salam But scored 1,063 votes.
Later, addressing a press conference, PPP AJK President Chaudhry Abdul Majid rejected the result and accused Punjab Government of poll fraud. He said that as many as 3,000 fake votes were prepared to manipulate the elections. He demanded of the government to declare the elections null and void.
On the other hand, Muslim Conference leader Sardar Attique Ahmed Khan claimed that the fire was opened by PPP workers, which caused the death of their own colleague.
